Small business is a big success at industry awards
A painter and decorator from Sunderland has been recognised at a flagship industry awards ceremony.
Gary Marsh Quality Decorators was named winner of the Decorative category at the Painting and Decorating Association’s (PDA) Premier Trophy Awards for a project at a private dwelling in Durham.
The company, which is celebrating 25 years in business this year, is owned and run by Gary Marsh, who started out as an apprentice at 16 and has previously appeared on BBC1’s DIY SOS.
Gary, said: “I was absolutely overjoyed to win this award as it was such a hard category with some excellent work by the other companies.
“What made it even more special was that I won against some big companies whereas I only have one employee.
“We were asked to tender for the project by an award-winning interior designer working for a London-based client who planned to use the property as a second home.
“There was lots of preparation required as the building was very old, and the project involved restoration of the ceiling, walls and woodwork, with a combination of painting and wallpapering skills required.”
The Premier Trophy Awards sees a panel of judges examine projects across the UK in a bid to showcase the highest quality standards in the trade.
Despite being a PDA member for 24 years, this is the first time Gary has entered a project into the Premier Trophy Awards.
Chief Executive at the PDA, Neil Ogilvie compered the Premier Trophy Awards ceremony which took place at Plaisterers’ Hall in London.
Neil Ogilvie said: “The Premier Trophy Awards are a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best in the painting and decorating sector.
“The awards are judged by a panel who have a wealth of experience and knowledge – and who are meticulous in assessing the standard and quality of work.
“I’d like to congratulate Gary on the professionalism, knowledge and skill that is reflected in this award.
“I’d also like to thank our sponsors who make this event possible.”
The main sponsor of the Premier Trophy Awards was Johnstone Trade Paint, with additional sponsors including Dulux Trade, Brewers Decorator Centres, Crown Paints, Purdy Professional Painting Tools, Tesa, Axus Décor, Q1 Premium Masking Solutions, Toupret, Repair Care, Mirka and Barrettine.
